12. Family Life (Ahkil Sharma)

Huffington Post recommended Family Life by Ahkil Sharma.  This book describes the story of a family that has moved from India to the United States in an effort to provide better opportunities for the boys.  The older son studies diligently to be accepted to a prestigious school but when he dives into a swimming pool he sustains a traumatic brain injury leaving him blind, unable to speak and in need of constant care.  The story describes how the family is affected by this tragedy.  The younger brother helps care for his older brother while working hard at school, the father becomes an alcoholic and the mother (a former teacher in India) becomes his full-time caregiver after a poor experience in a nursing home.  It was a sad book revolving around the choices that are made after a tragedy.
